TRUE CONFESSIONS Glitter may have been a turkey, but it wasn't so bad that it led Mariah Carey to attempt suicide — at least that's what the 32-year-old diva tells Matt Lauer on tonight's Dateline NBC. Carey insists it's "absolutely not" true that she tried to kill herself on July 25, 2001, when she was rushed to a New York hospital after her mom called 911. "I'm far too much of a spiritual person to do that," she says. "That's God's choice when it's time for me to go." She also downplays talk that she suffered a nervous breakdown in the wake of her Glitter debacle. "No, a nervous breakdown is not accurate," she says. "Because a nervous breakdown, you know, you don't recover from so quickly. All I needed was, like, five hours' sleep." Meanwhile, Carey's much-hyped comeback album Charmbracelet lands in stores today, and the reviews are rather, well, glittery. "Carey makes a concerted effort to project more maturity and sophistication," says USA Today. The New York Post goes a step further, calling the CD "an excellent effort." |
