IT'S FOX'S TURN
Fox, which also announced its fall lineup today, is adding five new dramas and two new comedies next season. The new series include the sitcom Kitchen Confidential, about a chef (Alias' Bradley Cooper) trying to make a comeback; Bones, a drama about a forensic anthropologist (Emily Deschanel) who teams up with an agent (Angel's David Boreanaz) to solve crimes; the legal drama Head Cases, starring Chris O'Donnell, and the high-concept soap Reunion, which chronicles the lives of six friends over the course of 20 years. The twist? Each episode represents one year. Among current shows, Arrested Development is being bounced from Sunday to Monday for the first half of the season, while Malcolm in the Middle will relocate to Fridays at 8:30 pm, following The Bernie Mac Show. Meanwhile, freshman smash House will stay put on Tuesdays until American Idol returns in January, at which point Hugh Laurie and Co. will be paired with 24 on Monday. Got all that? If not, click here to take a closer look at Fox's fall sked.
DIRTY LAUNDRY
Desperate Housewives costar Cody Kasch — who plays troubled teen Zach Young on the ABC smash — was arrested Tuesday in Manhattan and charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession. He was given a ticket and released. No court date has been set. In related news, E! has announced that production on Kasch's True Hollywood Story will begin 10 years ahead of schedule.
AND THEN THERE WERE DEUX...
As expected, 21-year-old class act Vonzell Solomon was eliminated from American Idol Wednesday night, narrowing the competition to just two: rocker-turned-a cappella star Bo Bice and country girl Carrie Underwood. The duo will face off next Tuesday at 8 pm. In other reality news, Detroit waitress Naima Mora was named the winner of America's Next Top Model. I think this means the mohawk is officially back.
CATASTROPHIC RATINGS
Britney Spears' sex-drenched reality show is officially a bust. Tuesday's debut of Britney and Kevin: Chaotic attracted a minuscule 3.4 million viewers, finishing dead last in its 9 pm time slot. UPN, however, was quick to crow that the show placed third among the coveted demo of adults 18-to-34 who have washing machines on their porch.
A SAD DAY IN GOTHAM CITY
After a lengthy battle with lung cancer, emphysema and pneumonia, Frank Gorshin passed away Tuesday at the age of 72. The actor was an Emmy nominee for his portrayal of the quizzical Riddler on the late-'60s Batman series. In what turned out to be his final role, Gorshin makes a cameo in tonight's CSI season finale.
NO SHOW
A theater owner in Kentucky is refusing to show Jane Fonda's Monster-in-Law because of her activism during the Vietnam War. Ike Boutwell, who reportedly trained pilots during the war, changed the marquee to read, "No Jane Fonda movie in this theater." Most folks were coming to see "Gift certificates available" anyway.
SHORT CUTS
The Dave Matthews Band's latest album, Stand Up, debuted atop the Billboard charts with more than 464,559 copies sold... FX is said to be thisclose to renewing The Shield for a fifth season... Super Size Me director Morgan Spurlock is being sued for $40 million by New York-based Cast Iron Partners, which claims the filmmaker failed to honor a deal to pay the company for office space.
END QUOTE
"I think talking to ghosts may skew younger than talking to God." That's CBS Chairman Leslie Moonves explaining his decision to drop Joan of Arcadia next season in favor of Jennifer Love Hewitt's Ghost Whisperer.
VERONICA'S CASKET
Hope y'all enjoyed Veronica Mars this season, 'cause although UPN renewed the flat-out brilliant detective dramedy, come fall, it's burying the show — that is, moving it to Wednesdays at 9 pm/ET opposite Lost. (Groan.) Other upfront revelations from the network that gets no respect: Kevin Hill is out, and two new comedies will join Eve and Cuts on Thursday nights — Everybody Hates Chris, about Chris Rock's childhood (with the jokester serving as the narrator) and Love, Inc., with Shannen Doherty as a matchmaker. (Like she'll do any better at it than Alicia Silverstone?) Denise Richards, meanwhile, will star in UPN's only new fall drama, Sex, Lies & Secrets, which sounds so much like Melrose Place, we can already smell the chlorine in the pool. Come midseason, UPN will fill the canceled soap's time slot — granted, I'm just guessing here — with South Beach, another prime-time sudser, this one produced by J.Lo and starring Vanessa L. Williams.
