SCREEN GEMS ABC's red-hot Desperate Housewives got a relatively cool reception from the Screen Actors Guild, which announced the nominees for its 11th annual kudosfest this morning. Housewives nabbed just two nods: best comedy ensemble, and best comedy actress for Teri Hatcher. Fox's Arrested Development also scored a paltry two nods, for best ensemble and actor Jason Bateman. SAG instead favored old favorites like Will & Grace (three nods) and Everybody Loves Raymond (four nods). The same held true among drama nominees, where the casts of newer hits such as Lost and Deadwood were passed over in favor of CSI, Six Feet Under, The West Wing, 24 and The Sopranos. On a sentimental note, Jerry Orbach picked up a posthumous nod for his final season of Law & Order. Among movies, Sideways led the field with four nominations, including best ensemble, best actor for Paul Giamatti, best supporting actor for Thomas Haden Church and best supporting actress for Virginia Madsen. Sideways will face off in the ensemble category — SAG's best-picture equivalent — with The Aviator, Finding Neverland, Hotel Rwanda, Million Dollar Baby and Ray. The big SAG winner? In Living Color grad Jamie Foxx, who landed four noms himself — two for Ray (ensemble and best actor), one for Collateral (supporting actor) and one for Redemption (best actor in a miniseries). The SAG awards will air live Feb. 5 on TNT. |
IN RELATED NEWS... Sideways picked up five awards at last night's 10th annual Critics' Choice awards, including best picture, supporting actor (Thomas Haden Church) and actress (Virginia Madsen), acting ensemble and writer. Best actor and actress honors went to Jamie Foxx and Hilary Swank respectively, while Martin Scorsese nabbed the best director prize for The Aviator. |

LIVE SWAP That 70's Show's Topher Grace has been tapped to replace an "ailing" Jennifer Garner as host of Saturday Night Live this weekend. And I put "ailing" in quotes because something's a little off about this whole viral infection/nerve-damage thing. |
LISTEN TO THIS... It's a Newhart reunion! Well, sort of. Peter Scolari and Julia Duffy — who played lovebirds on Bob Newhart's 1982-90 sitcom — will guest-star on Monday's Listen Up (8:30 pm/ET on CBS). In the episode, entitled "Snub Thy Neighbor," they play Jason Alexander's snooty new next-door neighbors. |
MOUNTAIN PEAKED You knew this item was comin', and here it is: Earlier today, WB officially canceled The Mountain. It's too bad, too. The show was actually getting better. (At least that's what the two people who were still watching told me.) |
THAT'S... NOT SO HOT Plans to shoot an episode of The Simple Life 3: Interns at a New Jersey middle school have been shelved after the idea got a big thumbs-down from parents. The episode would have featured Paris and Nicole working as "substitute teachers" and "cafeteria monitors" at the J.P. Cleary Middle School in Buena Vista Township. And I put "substitute teachers" and "cafeteria monitors" in quotes because we all know they'd just end up making out with some sixth-grader. |
GIRL, GIRL, GIRL Motley Crüe frontman Vince Neil married girlfriend Lia Gerardini Sunday at the Four Seasons hotel in Las Vegas. Guests included Tommy Lee, Dennis Rodman and Nikki Sixx, as well as Neil's Surreal Life costars MC Hammer and Brande Roderick. Corey Feldman, meanwhile, served as the best valet man. |
RAPID DEVELOPMENT Arrested Development scene-stealer Jeffrey Tambor became a father and a grandfather in the span of one week last month. The 60-year-old actor and wife Kasia, 35, welcomed son Gabriel Kasper on Dec. 10. Four days later, Tambor's daughter, Molly, gave birth to son Mason Jay Moore. And if that wasn't enough, li'l Mason was reportedly seen making googly eyes at Dora the Explorer, so expect an announcement from these two any day now. Congratulations to everyone! |
